Franchise History

2005 – Dennis, MaryEllen and Andrew Valkanoff form MAD Treats, Inc and purchase DQ Grill & Chill multiple unit development rights for Wake County, North Carolina.

2006 – In May of 2006 MAD Treats, Inc. opens the company’s first DQ Grill & Chill location on New Bern Avenue in Raleigh.  The store opens to much fanfare and success.  Raleigh is introduced to MAD Treats, Inc.’s approach to “World Class Customer Service.”

2007 – In August of 2007 MAD Treats, Inc opens the second DQ Grill & Chill location in Morrisville.  The Morrisville community welcomes the store with open arms.

2008 – In December of 2008 MAD Treats, Inc. opens a new concept DQ/Orange Julius Cornerstone in Brier Creek Commons in northern Wake County.  It provides shoppers and local residents with traditional DQ favorites with the additional fruit beverages and smoothies offered by Orange Julius.

Today – MAD Treats, Inc. continues to be committed to “World Class Customer Service” while providing each guest an opportunity to create and “Smile and a Story.” 

The History of Dairy Queen:
1938 –  Americans discover McCullough’s new, softer, and tastier kind of ice cream called “soft serve”
1940 – “The Cone With The Curl On Top” lights up for the first time in Joliet, Illinois.
1949 – Shakes, Malts, are added to the line of sundaes, cones and take home pints.
1953 – The first Dairy Queen® store opens in Canada
1955 – The Dilly ® Bar is introduced to popular acclaim
1961 – The 3,000 store chain launces Mr. Misty drinks, pioneering the “slush” drink business
1968 – The Buster Bar ®debuts
1971 – The “scrumpdillyishus” Peanut Buster ® Parfait premieres with phenomenal success
1979 – Dairy Queen®  debuts in the Middle East
1985 – The Blizzard® makes a spectacular debut.
1991 – The first Dairy Queen® opens in Mexico
1998 – DQ® is purchased by investor Warren Buffett.
Today – DQ® continues to offer great food in over 5800 stores operating worldwide


History of Orange Julius
1926 – Julius Freed and his partner Bill Hamlin open and orange juice stand in Los Angeles
1929 – Hamlin has opened 100 Orange Julius®  stores across the United States.
1962 – The first Orange Julius® opens in Canada.
1965 – Johnny Carson is presented with a lifetime free Orange Julius® card good to all locations across the America.
1977 – The first Orange Julius® opens in Hong Kong
1985 – Orange Julius® debuts a line of original fruit smoothies
1987 – Orange Julius® is purchased by International Dairy Queen, Inc.
Today – Orange Julius® continues to offer great drinks throughout the world.
